Tension grips Malabon neighborhood as residents gird for demolition

Tension gripped a neighborhood in Malabon City as local residents there braced themselves for a supposed demolition of their homes.

 

Residents and members of militant groups barricaded a part of Governor Pascual road in Catmon village in Malabon, radio dzBB's Allan Gatus reported Wednesday.

 

Many of the residents used pieces of wood for their barricades, which rendered parts of the road in the area impassable to vehicles.

 

 

Police and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority teams were seen in the area as of early Wednesday, the report added.

 

Militant urban poor groups had protested the demolition of homes of informal settlers in other parts of Metro Manila in past months.

 

In past demolitions in Metro Manila, residents had clashed with demolition teams, at times throwing rocks and objects at them. — RSJ, GMA News
