Blast from buried explosive at UP Diliman wounds 2 workers

(Updated 12:24 a.m., 29 January 2013) A blast rocked UP Diliman campus on Monday afternoon, hurting two construction workers near the Center for International Studies at Palma Hall, College of Mass Communication student publication Tinig ng Plaridel reported.

According to a report on GMA News' "24 Oras," the initial investigation by the  Quezon City Police District-Explosives Ordinance Division (QCPD-EOD) revealed that the victims were digging space for a new streetlamp when they hit the pillbox.
The victims, who were identified as Reynaldo Natividad and Faustino Valencia, were immediately brought to the East Avenue Medical Center, and are now in good condition, the report said. Investigators are considering the possibility of the pillbox belonging to a fraternity, who is said to hangout in the area where it was found. "Sabi ng taga-UP Police, itong area na to is tambayan ng isang fraternity. Posible na sa kanila yung pillbox na yun. Usually yan, mababaw lang yan para madaling makuha in case na magkaron ng any kaguluhan sa isang area," P/Insp. Noel Sublay, QCPD-EOD chief said in the report. However, Chief Security Officer Edgardo Dagdag said in the report, "Let's not blame the fraternities right away. Fraternities are civilized people din. We will be looking for these possibilities." Meanwhile, Alex Santos of the University Student Council (USC) called for vigilance. "Right now I think we have to all be vigilant, even students and all the officials in UP to really search the grounds in UP, cause it's already an issue of security on our campus," she said in the report. — Roehl Bautista/Amanda Lago/RSJ/HS, GMA News
