MMDA launches PWD-friendly pedestrian crossing

Persons with disabilities (PWDs) can expect to benefit from a new PWD-friendly pedestrian crossing launched by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority on Aurora Boulevard in Cubao, Quezon City. The PWD-friendly pedestrian crossing is at the corner of Aurora Boulevard and Imperial Street, in front of Isetann Mall. MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said this is the first of PWD-friendly pedestrian crossings they are planning to put up in the coming weeks.

"A Metrobase staff will be monitoring the pedestrian crossing 24/7, and will be in charge of giving out verbal instructions once the traffic lights change," Tolentino said of the initial crossing.

He said they plan to put up similar facilities at the corner of Aurora Boulevard and J.P. Rizal Street in Project 4, Quezon City; and at Santolan Road corner Marcos Highway in Pasig City.

Quezon City and Pasig City are two of the cities in Metro Manila that have the most number of PWDs, the MMDA noted.

The PWD-friendly pedestrian crossing has a traffic signal system integrated with a closed circuit television (CCTV) camera directly connected to the MMDA Metrobase office.

The MMDA set up the new facility to mark Women with Disabilities Day, which is held every last Monday of March. —KG, GMA News
