Wednesday may be a holiday, but motorists may still want to take alternate routes from Mendiola Bridge near Malacañang, Manila police suggested Monday.
The Manila Police District said Mendiola may get crowded due to planned protest marches there by labor groups on Labor Day, radio dzBB's Manny Vargas reported.
One of the alternate routes suggested included taking Ayala Boulevard to Arlegui Street, Quezon Boulevard and Quiapo, Manila.
Another involves taking Bilibid Viejo and Loyola Streets, C.M. Recto Avenue, Morayta Street, then España Boulevard.
Militant worker groups are expected to march to Mendiola on Wednesday to call for better working conditions for the labor sector.
Meanwhile, the MPD said it has readied sufficient personnel to deal with the protesters on Wednesday.
MPD officer-in-charge Senior Superintendent Roberto Po said they may ask the Metro Manila police for civil disturbance management unit reinforcements.
A separate dzBB report said labor groups led by the Kilusang Mayo Uno are preparing a mural and an effigy of President Benigno Aquino III for the event.
The effigy depicts Aquino on a plane, with US President Barack Obama as the pilot.
The effigy is to be displayed at the workers' program at Liwasang Bonifacio and burned at Mendiola. —KG, GMA News
