The water lilies that are usually seen as an annoyance for clogging the Pasig River are, this time, given credit for helping in the containment of an oil spill from a depot in Manila's Sta. Ana district. Manila city administrator Jay Marzan said that, aside from the oil spill boom placed by the Philippine Coast Guard in the area, water lilies helped contain the environmental threat as the oil clung to them. City officials also said there was no further indication of oil leaking into the Pasig River as of Monday morning, radio dzBB's Manny Vargas reported. However, the city government said there was still much cleaning up to do, as two to three kilometers of the Pasig River had been affected by the oil spill. Authorities are now investigating Larraine Marketing, whose facility had been tagged as the source of the oil leak. The spill started as early as Saturday night, prompting many residents to complain of the foul odor. — DVM, GMA News
