The cleanup of oil that spilled on the Pasig River from a private depot in Sta. Ana, Manila last weekend may take at least two to three more days, the Philippine Coast Guard said on Tuesday.
Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Armand Balilo said this includes removing the water lilies that "absorbed" the oil, radio dzBB's Manny Vargas reported.
Balilo said they are now coordinating with local government officials for the disposal of the water lilies and the spilled oil.
He also said they will continue monitoring the Pasig River to make sure there is no more leak. For now, he said the oil leak is considered "contained."
Last Saturday, oil leaking from a private depot affected several residents in the Sta. Ana and Pandacan districts.
An investigation showed the depot concerned lacked permits to store oil.
The oil spill has also prompted city officials to conduct an inspection of storage facilities in the Sta. Ana and Pandacan areas in Manila. —KG, GMA News
