Marikina River water level goes down, but number of evacuees rises

Even as the water level at the Marikina River has started to go down, evacuation centers in Marikina City continued to swell with families forced out of their residences due to incessant rain.

The Marikina Public Information Office, on its official Twitter account, said that as of 10:08 a.m. Monday, water level at the river has gone down to 15.2 meters.
 
Earlier in the day, water level at the river went past 16 meters, prompting local authorities to sound an Alarm Level 2.
 
Shortly before 5 a.m., however, the city alarm went down to Alarm Level 1 after the river level went under the 16-meter mark. By 7 a.m., water level was at 15.6 meters.
 
Meanwhile, the number of families that have been evacuated has gone up to 432 or around 2,358 individuals, according to local autborities.
 
The Marikina City PIO said the areas where families were evacuated included:
 
  • 80 families or 415 people at Nangka Elementary School 
  • 108 families or 551 people at Bulelak Gym 
  • 32 families or 213 people at Filipinas Village Gym
  • 16 families or 68 people at Concepcion Elementary School
  • 171 families or 983 people at H. Bautista Elementary School
  • 25 families or 128 people at Malanday Elementary School
 
Marikina City Authorities observe the following rules in sounding out alarms:
 
  • Alarm Level 1: When water level reaches 15 meters (Warning)
  • Alarm Level 2: Water level reaches 16 meters (Prepare to leave)
  • Alarm Level 3: Water level reaches 17 meters (Voluntary Evacuation).
  • Alarm Level 4: Water level reaches 18 meters (Forced Evacuation)
  • Alarm Level 5: Water level reaches 19 meters and beyond.
 
Water level at the Marikina River is measured through a stream gauge located under the Marikina Bridge. — RSJ, GMA News
