(Updated 10:18 a.m.) At least three bodies of victims killed in a deadly Skyway accident on Monday have yet to be claimed by their family members.
The bodies of a woman, believed to be in her 40s, and two men, probably around ages 28 or older, are still unclaimed at the Veronica Funeral Homes in Pasay City after they perished in a deadly accident involving a bus that flew off the Skyway and crashed into the service road below, a report on GMA News TV's News To Go on Tuesday said.
Meanwhile, three other bodies have yet to be claimed at the Funeraria Amigo in Taguig City, the report added.
The passenger bus, operated by Don Mariano Transit Corp., fell off the southbound part of the Skyway in Taguig City before dawn Monday and crashed into a van below. It was believed to be speeding.
At least 18 were killed in the accident, which prompted the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board to suspend – as preventive action – the firm's entire 78-unit fleet for 30 days.
Authorities were left wondering why bodies of the victims have yet to be claimed, and noted that their family members may be from outside Metro Manila, according to the report.
On Monday, grieving families went to the Funeraria Amigo in Taguig City to claim their loved ones who perished in the bus accident that greeted the commuting public a week before Christmas.
Meanwhile, charges have been filed against Don Mariano Transit Corp. and the driver of the ill-fated bus, the Philippine National Police's Highway Patrol Group (HPG) said Tuesday.
HPG spokesperson Superintendent Elizabeth Velasquez said the registered owner of the bus line as well as the bus driver, Carmelo Calatcat, are facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, injuries and damage to property.
The charges were filed in the Parañaque City Prosecutors' Office.
However, Second Assistant City Prosecutor Napoleon Ramolete said the case is a criminal one and thus involves the driver and not the bus company.
The bus driver survived but is in critical condition.
The tires of the bus were found to be worn out. Survivors also said the driver seemed to be sleepy at the time of the incident and that he was driving beyond the speed limit even though the road was wet. —Amanda Fernandez/KG/RSJ, GMA News
