(Updated 4:53 p.m.) A sports car driver hurtled down a near empty EDSA early Monday morning until a concrete post got in his way. He survived the crash after an airbag cushioned the impact.

The front part of the Nissan Fairlady sedan was wrecked after the car hit the post along the southbound lane of EDSA around 2:30 a.m., investigator Enrique Bautista of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said by phone.

The driver of the sports car, Marlon Joson, 32, sustained only minor injuries, Bautista added.

But the victim complained of pain in the ribs as he was being rescued from the wreckage, a report on GMA News' "Unang Balita" said.

According to the Nissan Motor Company's website, a brand new Nissan Fairlady costs from 3.5 million yen (over P1.5 million) to 5.5 million yen (over P2.3 million). On Sulit.com, a used Fairlady in the Philippines can cost over P2 million.

A witness, Marlin Reales, said in the television report that the car was speeding when it hit the post, causing it to go in circles before stopping. No other cars were hit in the incident.

PO2 Henry Luna, investigator at the QCPD Traffic Sector 4, urged motorists not to speed especially in a sports car.

"Iba kasi ang pagmamaneho ng sports car kaysa sa ... karaniwang sasakyan... 'Pag hindi tayo sanay, huwag natin i-try 'yung masyadong mabilis," Luna said in the television report.

According to a report on GMA News' 24 Oras late last year, road accidents, mainly due to speeding, are on the rise from 2012.

From January to November 2013, the national police's Highway Patrol Group (HPG) recorded 11,808 accidents – 3,410 happened on national roads while 944 were bus-related. In 2012, the HPG recorded 9,740 accidents.

The most recent road accident due to speeding was that of the Don Mariano bus crash, when the ill-fated bus fell off the the Skyway, initially killing 18 people. The death toll rose to 19 when the bus driver died a week later.
