SLIDESHOW: Mayhem and panic at the MRT crash scene

Crumpled metal, terrified passengers, and the usual pack of "usiseros" were among the images captured by camera phones at the scene of the MRT crash in Pasay City on Wednesday.

As seen in some Youscoop photos, many of those hurt in the derailment of a Metro Rail Transit train were women as front-end coaches are reserved for women, children, and the elderly.

Pictures sent by Youscoopers also indicated panic among the passengers as they went out of the train after it overshot the Taft Avenue station.

The train also hit a lamppost that then fell on an SUV.

The  Department of Transportation and Communications said the southbound MRT train that figured in the accident stalled between the last two stations of the track.

"The derailed train initially stalled between the Magallanes and Taft stations and, following railway SOPs, had to be pushed by the next oncoming train," DOTC spokesperson Miguel Sagcal said.

"The two trains were coupled or linked together, but along the way, this coupling disconnected. This caused the derailed train to go past the Taft platform," he added. —Rouchelle Dinglasan/NB, GMA News
