Mystery surrounds a woman with a large bag, who was found wandering in Taguig City and taken in by local barangay officials last week.

Workers at Barangay Bagumbayan got a big surprise Tuesday as they tried to bathe the woman, and opened her bag to look for a change of clothes.

But instead of clothes, they found more than P70,000 in bills and coins, GMA News' Ivan Mayrina reported on "24 Oras."

The report said barangay workers saw the woman sitting on the street, appearing unkempt but carrying a checkered bag. She said she was from Barangay Malibay in Pasay city.

She was brought to the barangay hall and on Tuesday barangay health workers offered to help her take a bath.

Barangay health worker Remedios Tenorio said she was shocked to see the woman's bag contain money. When counted, the money—mostly in twenty-peso and thousand-peso bills—amounted to P73,990.

A photo tweeted by radio dzBB's Sam Nielsen showed the money also included several coins.

The "24 Oras" report said the woman claimed she saved the money from vending, since 1978.

"Naipon-ipon lang po yan eh," she said.

When asked what she planned to do with the money, she said, "ilagay ko yan sa magandang kamay."

A barangay ID indicated the woman is 54 years old and a resident from Malibay in Pasay. The woman said she was brought to Taguig by a certain Gina.

But she said she no longer had relatives.

In the meantime, the barangay is taking the money for safekeeping and will await the decision of the Department of Social Welfare and Development on what to do. —Joel Locsin/NB, GMA News
