EDSA bike, pedestrian lanes will not push through on June 28 –MMDA

(Updated 7:41 p.m.) The two non-motorized lanes proposed on EDSA on Sunday, June 28, will not push through, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

A memorandum signed on Friday stated that the Bayanihan sa Daan's proposal was deferred due to the following reasons:

-- SM Mall of Asia has a previously scheduled fun run on the same date and its confirmity to the Bayanihan sa Daan could not be secured;
-- There are reblocking and road repair projects by the Department of Public Works and Highways in EDSA;
-- Administrative difficulties within the Agency;
-- Lack of a widespread public information campaign from the proponent about the Bayanihan sa Daan; and
-- Weekend Mall Sales along EDSA

Tony Oposa of Bayanihan sa Daan, meanwhile, said they will proceed with the activity "with a smaller and shorter June 28 road sharing ground-testing."

"We fully understand the predicament of the MMDA that it cannot spread itself too thin. We welcome the suggestion to defer the formal launch of the Road Sharing Exercise," he said on Facebook.

He said that at 6 a.m., only the northbound side of EDSA from the MOA (Mall of Asia) to the Magallanes Interchange will be the site of the dry run.

The memo, sent by MMDA chairman Franciso Tolentino to GMA News Online, said the  recommendation was "intended to provide the proponent and other stakeholders with sufficient time and resources in order to ensure the success of the activity if it is to be rescheduled."

Tolentino earlier announced that the proposal made on Monday needed further examination and that he needed to "consider the response of the public."

Under "EDSA Evolution", the rightmost lane would be allotted to pedestrians. The lane next to it would be used by bicycles, while the third and fourth lanes will be used by city and provincial buses. Private cars will only be allowed in the two leftmost lanes, while motorcycle riders will only be allowed in the fifth lane.

It was meant to be implemented on June 28, Sunday, from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. and would begin from EDSA Taft to Ortigas northbound, and from Ortigas to Taft in the southbound direction. —KBK, GMA News
