Court moves Ryan Jaworskis arraignment to February

A Makati court has deferred the arraignment of Ryan Jaworski, son of former senator and basketball legend Robert Jaworski, in connection with the criminal charges filed against him following a September shootout with the police.

A report on GMA News TV's "Balitanghali" on Wednesday said Jaworski's arraignment was moved  to February 10, 2016 after his lawyers filed a petition with the Department of Justice seeking a review of the prosecutors' resolution indicting him.

Ryan Jaworski is facing four counts of attempted murder and one count of illegal possession of firearms before the sala of Presiding Judge Benjamin Pozon of Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 139.

The case stemmed from a shootout with policemen in Makati City last September 19 during an operation on the alleged gunrunning activities of Jaworski and companion Joselito Au, who is facing charges for two counts of physical injury.

Chief Inspector Manny Bayaona of the National Capital Region Police Office said before the shootout, Jaworski's group had an illegal transaction with their asset who posed as a buyer of firearms. Jaworski was wounded in the incident.

After a few moments, according to the police, the operation turned into a shootout when Jaworski's camp sensed the entrapment operation and tried to escape by firing at the police.

Jaworski's camp has denied the charges, saying the operation was a “hulidap” or police extortion disguised as a legitimate arrest. —Bianca Rose Dabu/KBK, GMA News
