The Philippine National Police on Tuesday filed charges against a young man who allegedly tied up and set fire to a 12-year-boy in Parañaque City, even as the suspect showed no remorse despite admitting to the crime.
GMA 7 news program “24 Oras” reported that the 19-year-old suspect, Wilfren Atok Azaña, was charged with frustrated murder in relation to Republic Act 7610 or the law against child abuse.
Azaña owned up to attempting to set fire to the victim, but he would not apologize for what he did to "Nilo", whom he burned with the help of two minors early Monday under the Skyway-Sucat Exit.
Azaña is allegedly a member of the “Batang Tawid” street gang, which was rivals with the victim's gang - the “Batang Phase 1”. A brawl broke out between the gangs just a week ago.
Azaña explained that he really wanted to kill the victim. "Sobrang galit po sa kanila, para makabawi.”
“Pagbabayaran ko [ang kasalanan ko] pero hindi ako nagsisisi."
The Nilo's uncle was meanwhile distraught over his nephew's injuries. "Halos hindi ko po matanggap. Kung ako siguro ang magulang ng bata, napakahirap tanggapin," said Moises dela Rama, adding that Azaña must suffer in jail.
Nilo is now recuperating at the Philippine General Hospital in Manila. — Virgil Lopez/DVM, GMA News
