Temperatures are not the only things rising this summer with both of Metro Manila's water utilities set to raise rates in April because of the foreign currency differential adjustment (FCDA).

West Zone customers of concessionaire Maynilad Water Services Inc. will increase its FCDA rate to P0.12 per cubic meter, an increase of P0.05 per cubic meter.

This means that Maynilad customers will pay an additional P0.15 to the total bill for those consuming 10 cubic meters per month, P0.57 for 20 cubic meters, and P1.17 for 30 cubic meters.

East Zone provider Manila Water Company, meanwhile, will increase its FCDA rate by P0.11 per cubic meter to P0.26 per cubic meter. Maynilad customers can thus expect a P0.59 increase in the bill for those consuming 10 cubic meters per month, P1.32 for 20 cubic meters, and P2.69 for 30 cubic meters.

The increased rate will be implemented beginning April 1.

"Yung lebel ng FCDA, depende yun sa loses or gains dahil sa exchange rate fluctuations," explained Joel Y,u the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System's Chief Regulator during a Monday report on GMA News TV's "State of the Nation with Jessica Soho"

"Isang pinakamalaking konsiderasyon dyan, kung gaano kalaki yung mga bayarin nila na denominated sa foreign currency."

Yu added that the rate hikes of the two concessionaires were manageable. “Hindi naman siya makakabutas ng bulsa. Kung makabutas man, maliit lamang kasi makikita naman natin doon sa epekto ng taripa siguro ang pinakamalaki na ay P2.69 para doon sa kumukunsumo ng 30 cubic meters,” he said. — Trisha Macas/DVM, GMA News
