Truck ban now in effect on Skyway
Starting Tuesday, Nov. 15, trucks have been banned on the Skyway, a report on Unang Balita on Wednesday said.
At 4 a.m. on Wednesday, however, some closed vans were spotted on the Skyway, although no big trailer trucks had been seen, GMA News' Mav Gonzales reported.
The truck ban was imposed to address the traffic problem and ensure that the Skyway and the soon-to-be-open NAIA Expressway are safe for motorists, the report said.
Exempted from the ban are trucks bearing essential commodities such as perishables as long as they pass safety requirements.
According to Skyway O&M, the operator of the Skyway, the ban was agreed upon after consultation with barangay officials, police, highway patrol units, mall owners, and other stakeholders who determined that it will not be safe for trucks to use the elevated road.
Having trucks on the Skway will also pose a risk to other motorists, they said.
Two accidents were recently reported on the Skyway involving delivery trucks, causing heavy traffic to the area.
RFID
Public utility vehicles and trucks are now also required to use radio frequency identification or RFID stickers to avoid the long queues at payment counters at toll gates. —KG, GMA News
