Tondo residents affected by fire comb through razed area for scrap that can be sold
Victims of the fire that engulfed a community in Parola Compound in Tondo, Manila on Tuesday night returned to the area on Thursday to save whatever items they could, a report on News To Go said.
Three thousand families were left homeless after the 10-hour fire which was put out Wednesday.
The affected families have been staying temporarily at evacuation centers, GMA News' Mark Salazar reported.
The residents picked up whatever they could from the burned houses—iron roofing, pieces of metal, broken bottles, plastic items—things that could be sold at the junk shop.
Some of the residents chose to stay outside the razed compound with their meager belongings beside them.
They said it is not easy, but they have to watch over their belongings while scavenging for items that could be sold.
More than 1,000 fire victims have sought shelter at the Delpan Sports Complex, while 700 families have been staying at the Delpan Evacuation Center.
A hundred families, meanwhile, were temporarily sheltered at the Iglesia Ni Kristo church across Parola Compound.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development and the local government continued to do a survey on the affected residents while waiting for the release of the P3 million calamity fund for the 3,000 affected families.
The local government and some nongovernment organizations have provided food for the affected residents at evacuation centers. —KG, GMA News
