Fredison Ong Atienza, the suspect in the killing of a motorist in Quezon City following an altercation last weekend, has been spotted in Boracay, a report by GMA News' Cesar Apolinario on "24 Oras" said Thursday.

Information on Atienza's presence in Boracay was first shared to GMA News by a certain Edwin Peter via photos sent through Facebook, with a message that said, "Alam ko kung nasaan si Fredison Ong."

This information was confirmed by Chief Supt. Guillermo Eleazar, head of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD), the report said.

"Sighted siya sa area. I have been coordinating with the regional director of the [Police Regional Office]-6," Eleazar said.

Eleazar said investigation showed Atienza, 46, left Manila for Caticlan last Sunday, a day after he shot Anthony Mendoza in the head during a traffic altercation on the corner of D. Tuazon Street and Quezon Avenue in Quezon City.

Atienza's identity was verified by Mendoza's brother, Michael, who was with the victim at the time, after the QCPD showed him a picture of the suspect.

"The chief of our Homicide Section, together with some of his operatives, nandun sila and they are coordinating with the Boracay Tourists Assistance Center commander," Eleazar said.

He added that the QCPD received information from the Boracay Police on Monday that Atienza was checked in at a hotel there where he is a frequent visitor. He also said the suspect may have coddlers in Boracay who help him transfer from one location to another.

"I decided na i-announce sa public na sighted siya at naniniwala tayong nandoon pa rin siya. Maaaring may nagbibigay ng proteksyon sa kanya. They are harboring the suspect in that island. Maaring palipat-lipat sya roon," Eleazar said.

Eleazar said Atienza was supposed to return to Manila on March 1 but failed to show up for his flight.

Meanwhile, Mendoza's family fears Atienza would escape authorities and criminal prosecution.

"May ginawa kang krimen, nagbakasyon ka pa. Talagang ang tapang din ng apog mo. Di ka natatakot na lumantad. Hindi mo maaalis sa amin isipin na sino yung tao sa likod niya, bakit ang tapang niyang ma-expose sa ibang lugar," Eneil Mendoza said.

Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II has instructed immigration personnel to keep a close watch of Atienza in case he tries to leave the country. —Joseph Tristan Roxas/KBK, GMA News
