Locals claim hearing gunshots the night Carl Angelo Arnaiz was killed
GMA 7 news program "24 Oras" spoke with several residents and officials in the area where 19-year-old Carl Angelo Arnaiz was killed, but none of them could corroborate the claim that the teenager had robbed a taxi driver and later tried to shoot it out with police officers.
Taxi driver Tomas Bagcal said that he picked up a passenger in Navotas, and when they got to the C3 road, the passenger pulled out a gun and took his wallet.
The robber alighted and Bagcal drove off, soon after coming across a group of police officers.
Bagcal reported the robbery, and Police Officer 1 Jeffrey Perez and Police Officer 1 Ricky Arquilita got on their motorcycles and headed for the C3 where Bagcal last saw the suspect.
Bagcal followed the police officers in his cab.
Arriving at the C3, the policemen and the driver saw someone walking along the road. The cab driver Bagcal identified the pedestrian as the robber.
The cops and Bagcal both claimed that the police officers then approached the pedestrian and identified themselves as policemen.
They claimed that the pedestrian then pulled out a gun and opened fire. The police officers returned fire and killed the shooter, who turned out to be the 19-year-old Arnaiz.
Remedios Cabilin, lived near the corner of C-3 Road and Torcillo Street, which was close to the scene of the shooting.
Cabilins said she heard continuous shots. "Ako, rinig ko, apat na putok... tuloy tuloy lang" she recounted.
However, she was too afraid and did not leave her house, and thus did not see the shooting.
Barangay Tanod Rolando Baldo meanwhile said that they had no report of a taxi driver being robbed during the night of the shooting. "Wala, sir, nabalitaan na lang namin 'noong may patay na roon," said Baldo. — Margaret Claire Layug/DVM, GMA News
