Cops foil bank robbery in Quezon City; 2 nabbed

Police foiled a robbery attempt on the Bank of Commerce's branch along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City, early Saturday.

A Balitanghali report said two still unidentified members of the group were caught by policemen inside the bank.

The report said the bank's alarm was triggered after the robbers breached the bank's vault, which only contained documents.

The robbers failed to drill through the bank's main vault, which contained cash and valuables.

Chief Superintendent Guillermo Eleazar, chief of the Quezon Police District Office, said the robbers are members of the so-called "termite gang" based on the equipment seized by the police and how they breached the bank's wall.

Eleazar said the robbers drilled a hole on the bank's wall with the use of electric drills and jacks.

Investigations showed that the robbers drilled through the wall from a vacant lot beside the bank.

"Ang assumption ko rito termite gang din ito eh. Kaya lang instead na sa ilalim ang daan nila, nakita nila may vacant lot na katabi," Eleazar said.

He said it was fortunate that the bank's security system was working and the robbery was detected earlier.

Follow-up investigations are ongoing to identify the remaining members of the group. —report by Bam Alegre/ALG, GMA News
