Manila Bay throws back 80 tons of garbage amid weekend rains

Eighty tons of garbage was thrown back by big waves in Manila Bay following torrential rains over the weekend.

According to a 24 Oras report by Jun Veneracion on Monday, 27 garbage trucks worth of trash has been collected along Roxas Boulevard since Saturday.

"Ang nangyari dito Sir parang ang basura mo eh babalik sa atin ng kalikasan," Celine Pialago, spokesperson of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said.

"Ang may gawa po nito ay 'yung mga taong walang disiplina eh. Kaya ito patuloy na mangyayari, araw-araw po ito tuwing habagat po ito po ang mararanasan po," added Che Borromeo, chief of the Task Force Manila Cleanup.

The MMDA expects that it would collect more garbage as the cleanup drive continues in the coming days.

Some individuals saw the situation as an opportunity, collecting plastic waste and selling them for P17 per kilo.

Weather bureau PAGASA earlier said rains would continue to prevail in Luzon due to the southwest monsoon enhanced by weather disturbances outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility. —Anna Felicia Bajo/JST, GMA News
