Almost 300 kilos of double dead meat and lechon confiscated in Manila


Operatives of the Manila Veterinary Inspection Board confiscated almost 300 kilos of double dead pork and lechon from two ambulant vendors in Manila on Tuesday.

The ambulant vendors were allegedly selling the double dead meat on Recto Avenue corner Ylaya Street in Tondo, according to a report on Unang Balita on Tuesday by James Agustin.

The lechon were being sold in plastic bags for P180 per kilo and displayed on top of tables when authorities conducted the operation at past 3 a.m.

Vendor Domingo Boza was arrested, while two others escaped.

According to the Veterinary Inspection Board, meat deemed double dead are pale, have a smell, and are not firm ("malabsa"). The lechon made from double dead meat may be half-cooked and have worms.

A person who eats double dead meat may experience diarrhea, vomiting, or food poisoning.

Boza, who said he was only tending to the stall and has no knowledge of the alleged double dead meat being sold, will face charges of violation of the Meat Inspection Code of the Philippines and the Food Safety Act of the Philippines.

The Manila Veterinary Inspection Board has already buried the confiscated meat in its disposal pit. —KG, GMA News
