DPWH plans to dredge 225,000 MT of trash from Manila Bay
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) plans to dredge 225,000 metric tons of garbage and grime from Manila Bay this year as part of the harbor's rehabilitation, according to a report by Maki Pulido on Balitanghali.
The desilting operation, which began on Tuesday, covers 1.5 kilometers of shoreline from the United States Embassy to Manila Yacht Club. It will cover a depth of 0.8 to 1 meter.
The DPWH brought 28 pieces of heavy equipment including amphibious excavators and debris segregators on the first day of dredging. Fifty department employees were in charge of the operation.
Fifty to 100 dump trucks' worth of garbage and grime are expected to be collected every day. The collected debris will be taken to the DPWH compound in Taguig City.
The DPWH also demonstrated a sewer inspection camera which can be inserted into drainages to identify which commercial establishments directly dump waste water into public canals emptying into Manila Bay.
The government agency has allotted P1 billion for the procurement of new equipment for the operation. — Marisse Panaligan/BM, GMA News
