Customs foils attempted smuggling of python kept in bluetooth speaker


Personnel of the Bureau of Customs-Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Sunday discovered the attempted smuggling of a python kept inside a bluetooth speaker.

The 20-inch long reticulated live python was turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the BOC said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

A python can grow to 32 feet long and swallow a human being or large animal, the BOC said.

The agency reminded the public that importing, exporting, and trading of wildlife animals without a permit is illegal and a violation of Republic Act 9147 (Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act) in relation to RA 10863 (Customs Modernization and Tariff Act).

Those found violating the said law may be imprisoned for one year and one day to two years, and fined P2,000 to P200,000. —KG, GMA News
