Mayor Isko wants to improve Manila’s old tenements, relocate residents

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno is planning to retrofit the dilapidated tenements in the city to ensure the safety of the dwellers, Ian Cruz reported on GMA News’ Unang Balita on Thursday.

In line with this, Moreno said he will order the in-city relocation of residents in the city's old tenements. He pointed out that these buildings are not safe anymore for the dwellers.

“Kailangan i-retrofit for safety ng mga tao. Madi-displace ngayon yung mga tao,” Moreno said. However, he clarified that the relocation would be temporary.

Tenement dwellers have complained about the rusty railings and stairs in tenement buildings. They also said water trickles from their ceiling during rains.

These 27 tenement buildings are already in poor condition, having been erected almost three decades ago in the 1990s. Also, these buildings are already crowded, the report said.

Moreno held a meeting with the National Housing Authority for the relocation of affected residents. — Joviland Rita/MDM, GMA News
