Barangay Old Balara in QC releases 1,000 frogs as part of anti-dengue campaign

After the health department declared a national dengue epidemic earlier this month, organizations, local government units and households were pushed to act to stop the mosquito-borne disease from spreading.

Some clean their surroundings, others used insect spray and fogging.

Barangay Old Balara in Quezon City started a anti-dengue campaign by releasing about 1,000 frogs as part of an anti-dengue campaign, Marisol Abdurahman reported on State of the Nation with Jessica Soho.

The barangay has recorded, from January 1 to August 3, at least 49 cases of dengue.

In order to stop the spread of the disease, the frogs were placed in creeks, rivers, and in vacant lots.

"Kaya po kami patuloy na gumagawa ng mga pamamaraan at umiisip ng paraan kasama ang mga taumbayan para totally masugpo po ang dengue," said Alan Franza, Old Balara Barangay chairman.

In Quezon City, there are about 3,500 cases of dengue and 29 deaths.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has opted to used the mosquito fish that eats the mosquito larvae or the kiti-kiti.

The agency released mosquito fish in the provinces of Pangasinan, Isabela, and Nueva Vizcaya. — BAP, GMA News
