The Manila City government on Monday warned that they would begin strictly implementing the city's curfew ordinance, and that it would be the parents who would be penalized for their children's curfew violations.

According to the Manila Public Information Office (PIO), the stricter enforcement of Ordinance No. 8547, which sets the curfew hours in the city from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., would start on Monday.

Parents of minors—those 17 years old and below—would have to face the following sanctions, depending on the age of their children who violated the curfew:

  • 12 years old and below - P5,000 penalty or up to 6 months of imprisonment,
  • 13-14 years old - P3,000 penalty or up to 3 months of imprisonment,
  • 15-17 years old - P2,000 penalty or up to one month of imprisonment.

The said penalties were pursuant to Ordinance No. 8243, according to the Manila PIO.

"Pagtungtong ng alas diyes ng gabi 'yung mga menor de edad niyong anak, papasukin niyo na sa loob ng bahay. Kung hindi naman, kami na ang mangangalaga sa kanila. Ilalagay namin sila sa mga institusyon kung saan mapoproteksyunan ang karapatan ng mga bata," Moreno said in James Agustin's report on GMA 7 news program 24 Oras.

On Sunday night, 22 street children caught brawling were taken into custody.

Mayor Isko Moreno also ordered the Manila Police District to track down sources of glue and other solvent-based products that street children use to get high with. — Dona Magsino/DVM, GMA News
