The Quezon City government has begun to provide financial assistance to hog raisers following the culling of more than 900 pigs and piglets in the city to prevent the spread of the African Swine Fever (ASF).

According to a statement released by the mayor's office on Wednesday, owners of the 146 pigs culled in Barangay Bagong Silangan will be the first to receive compensation of P3,000 for each pig and P1,500 for each piglet culled.

According to GMA News' Tina Panganiban-Perez, some of the hog raisers who received the confirmation said that the amount was far below the market value of P10,000 for each pig.

The Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) had confirmed pigs from Sitio Veterans (Area 5) and Oriole (Area 2) in this barangay to be positive for ASF.

Head of the City Veterinary Office Dr. Anamarie Cabel called on hog raisers to immediately inform the office if there are suspicions of ASF. Symptoms include high fever, nose bleeding, and ear hemorrhage among others. — Joahna Lei Casilao/BM, GMA News
