Vico Sotto: Pasig to follow nat’l gov’t on tricycles ban

Pasig City will comply with the inclusion of tricycles in the ban on public transportation amid the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Mayor Vico Sotto said on Thursday night.

“Kami ho dito sa Pasig, magkocomply kami sa kahit anong direktiba ng ating nasyonal na pamahalaan,” Sotto said in an interview on “24 Oras".

Sotto earlier asked the national government to exempt tricycles from the ban on public transportation amid the enhanced community quarantine, saying he had allowed tricycle operations to ferry health workers and emergency patients to various hospitals in Pasig.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government urged Sotto to check the means of other LGUs in ferrying medical workers.

Under Secretary Jonathan Malaya said other cities and municipalities did not allow tricycles in their areas to operate.

He also said the national government could not allow this because it would defect the entire purpose of the quarantine.

"Pasensya na po, Mayor. Hindi po talaga namin kayo puwedeng pabigyan. Kasi po if we allow mass transportation in Pasig, mamaya po magrerequest na ang Valenzuela, ang Cabuyao, magrerequest na po ang lahat," Malaya said.

Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles insisted that social distancing would be difficult to enforce in tricycles.  -NB, GMA News
