Some 12,000 scholars of Makati City will be able to receive their financial assistance through mobile wallet GCash even as onsite classes have been suspended, Globe Fintech Innovations Inc. (Mynt) announced Wednesday.

In a statement, Mynt said the scholars will receive P1,000 cash assistance through their Makatizen cards and GCash accounts which allow cashless and digital solutions.

"This means that students can use the cash grant from Makati for e-learning and expand their knowledge to purchase educational materials online," said Mynt.

"They can top-up their mobile load credits to gain greater access to various information and services that are accessible online. Given that schools are shifting to virtual classrooms, having an e-wallet is more crucial than ever."

This comes as classes have shifted to off-site arrangements given the implementation of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) amid the COVID-19 health crisis.

The ECQ -- which has already been extended two times -- will lapse on May 15, two months after it was first ordered on March 17. --Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/KBK, GMA News
