QC's Belmonte backs proposal to rename Roosevelt Avenue after FPJ
Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte on Saturday expressed her support for the proposal of Senate President Vicente Sotto III to rename Roosevelt Avenue after National Artist Fernando Poe Jr.
“The Senate President’s suggestion to rename Roosevelt Avenue after the late action king more popularly known as FPJ is a welcome development and a win-win solution for everyone concerned,” Belmonte said in a statement.
Senator Lito Lapid had initially filed a bill seeking to rename Del Monte Avenue in Quezon City after Fernando Poe Jr.
However, several groups, including a church in the city and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines opposed the proposal due to Del Monte Avenue's historical significance.
Following this, Senate President Vicente Sotto III proposed that Roosevelt Avenue should be renamed instead. He said he already discussed the matter with Lapid and Senate Committee on Public Works chairperson Manny Pacquiao.
Meanwhile, Belmonte also backed the city council’s decision to pass a resolution urging the House and the Senate to rename Roosevelt Avenue instead.
“It is but right and proper to honor the late Fernando Poe Junior for his invaluable contribution to the city and our culture. At the same time, we also recognize the historical and religious significance of the area,” Belmonte said. — DVM, GMA News
