Rider killed after being hit by newbie driver in QC

Arnulfo Allejo left home Monday afternoon aboard his motorcycle for a short trip to get the family’s food. 

He never returned after being hit and killed by an SUV driver who was just learning to navigate his vehicle along Tandang Sora and Visayas Avenue in Quezon City, according to Oscar Oida's report on "24 Oras."

“Hindi na po siya conscious nung dumating kami, wala na s’yang malay, hindi na rin kami naririnig kaya diretso na kami sa ospital,” Jobert Elias, a medic of the Tandang Sora rescue, said.

Allejo, however, was pronounced dead on arrival in the hospital.

Police Lieutenant Vicente Borac Jr., QC Traffic Sector commander, identified the driver of the SUV as Alvin Mejico, who is currently detained and facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and damage to property.

According to Borac, the 26-year-old driver was a holder of a professional license but admitted before the police that it was his first time to drive long distance.

“Hindi pa s’ya ganun kagaling talaga magmaneho. Although meron s’yang professional drivers license pero ‘yung ganung kahabang takbo, first time nya,” Borac said.

Barangay Pasong Tamo chairperson Emmanuel Banjo Pilar said the CCTV footage showed Mejico’s white SUV stopped in an intersection before speeding away and hitting Allejo.

“Makikita sa video na talagang hindi bihasang magmaneho, kaya kung mapapansin natin pakadyot-kadyot pa ang sasakyan bago tumakbo nang mabilis,” Pilar said.

Pilar added he plans to write the Land Transportation Office to inquire how Mejica was issued a  license even if he doesn’t know how to drive yet.

Allejo’s widow, Arlene, demanded justice for the death of his husband who left behind three children.—LDF, GMA News
