2 inmates, 1 jail officer killed in Marikina hostage incident

Two inmates and a jail officer were killed in a shootout at the Marikina City jail on Thursday evening, Mark Makalalad reported on Super Radyo's DZBB.

The shootout occurred after the inmates stole the firearm of one of the guards, then took jail staff members hostage in their attempt to escape.

A negotiation aimed at the release of the hostages was conducted lasted for 30 minutes until the inmates shot at responding policemen, prompting them to retaliate.

Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Chief Jail Director Allan Iral has ordered the conduct of an investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, all jail facilities within the National Capital Region are on alert following the hostage incident. -- BAP, GMA News
