Mother, 2 children die in Taguig fire

Two children and their mother were killed in a fire that broke out in a residential area in Taguig City on Saturday morning.

GMA News' Jamie Santos reported on  “24 Oras Weekend” that the mother was able to give her four-month-old baby to a relative before going back to their burning house to save her other two children, aged two, and three.

She died in the fire with her two children.

“Yung dalawang bata nandoon sa taas, sa terrace, sa likuran pa. Pagkita ko na, wala na, nandito kami ang init na nakakapaso na talaga,” Esper Mata, the children's grandmother, said.

(The two children were upstairs, on the terrace in the back of the house. When I arrived here, the fire already reached the house.)

At least 60 families or 200 individuals lost their homes to the fire.

Aside from the three fatalities, no other casualties were reported.

Authorities said the houses in Barangay Calzada, Tipas, Taguig were made of light materials, causing the fire to spread quickly.

“Maliit lang yung area kaya nung nagspark yung apoy, talagang gumapang na sa kabahayan,” Marilyn Tanyag,  captain of Barangay Calzada.

(The area is small, so when the fire broke out, it spread quickly to other houses.)

Personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) are still conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. —Richa Noriega/LBG, GMA News
