MMDA, MMC conducting further study for possible new number coding scheme

The Metro Manila Council (MMC) and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) are conducting further study for the implementation of a new number coding scheme in the region.

At the Laging Handa public briefing on Friday, MMDA chairperson Romando Artes said Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto suggested the study during a meeting between the MMDA and MMC before the 2022 polls.

“'Yan po ay pagpupulungan namin once na matapos po 'yung further study na 'yan. At magde-decide po ang MMC kung kailan po ipapatupad itong bagong number coding scheme,” he said.

(We will have a meeting for the new number coding scheme once the further study is finished. And the MMC will decide when the new number coding scheme will be implemented.)

Artes said there is also a suggestion to postpone the implementation of the new number coding scheme until the next administration.

If the new scheme will be implemented before the current administration ends, Artes said it is suggested to have a review on the policy every three months.

In April, the MMDA proposed a new number coding scheme targeted to reduce the number of vehicles passing Metro Manila's major roads by 40%.

Under the proposed coding system, private vehicles will be prohibited from traversing the affected roads for two days from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Plate numbers ending 1 and 2 will be on Monday and Wednesday; those ending in 3 and 4 on Monday and Thursday; 5 and 6 every Tuesday and Thursday; 7 and 8 Tuesday and Friday; and 9 and 0 every Wednesday and Friday.

Public utility vehicles (PUV) such as buses, jeepneys, taxis, and ride-hailing services are excluded from the scheme.

The MMDA is currently implementing the modified number coding scheme from 5:00 p.m. to 8 p.m. from Monday to Friday except holidays.—AOL, GMA News
