Can't eat, sleep: Furigay family driver still in shock after Ateneo shooting

The family driver of slain former Lamitan City mayor Rose Furigay has yet to recover from the shock following Sunday's shooting incident at the Ateneo de Manila University campus in Quezon City that left three people dead, including Furigay.

"Hanggang ngayon hindi ako makakain, makatulog. Nagsimula akong mag-ano nung Linggo pa, hanggang ngayon talagang walang panlasa," the driver, whose identity is withheld, said in James Agustin's report on Unang Balita on Wednesday.

(Up to now I can't eat and sleep. Since Sunday. I can't taste anything.)

Aside from Furigay, also killed in the incident were her executive aide Victor Capistrano and university security guard Jeneven Bandiala.

According to the driver, who has been working for the Furigay family for almost seven years, he had just dropped off the former mayor and her daughter Hannah at the Ateneo campus when he heard the shots. He said he initially thought that the sounds were part of the graduation ceremony that was about to take place.

"May narinig akong putok pero mahina, na akala ko ay parang welcome lang iyon sa kanila sa graduation. Pag tingin ko may bumubulagta na," the driver said.

(I heard shots but they were not loud. I thought the graduates were just being welcomed. Then I saw somebody fall down.)

He said he learned that Furigay was shot when he saw Hannah embracing the body and crying.

"Kaya ko lang nalaman na madam ko ang nabaril nung niyakap siya ni Hannah na umiiyak [I only knew that madam was shot when she was embraced by Hannah crying]," he said.

It was the driver who brought Hannah, who was also shot, to the hospital. She is now in stable condition but will need a second operation.

The alleged gunman, Dr. Chao-Tiao Yumol, was arrested moments after the incident. Charges have already been filed against him. Police cite personal grudge as the motive behind the shooting. —KBK, GMA News
