The Philippine National Police on Monday said it will honor Jeneven Bandiala, the security guard who was killed in a shooting incident in Ateneo de Manila University, with Medalya ng Katangi-tanging Asal for his heroism.

In a statement, the PNP acknowledged Bandiala’s selfless act when he attempted to stop gunman Chao-Tiao Yumol during the July 24 shooting incident.

PNP director for operations Police Major General Valeriano de Leon said the Civil Security Group (CSG) is now coordinating with Bandiala’s family for the conferment of the posthumous award.

“Security guard Jeneven Bandiala deserves this honor for the heroism he showed in safeguarding students and other individuals on campus and for supporting the PNP in bringing justice by attempting to stop the gunman from escaping," De Leon said.

"This heroic gesture cost him his life, but his bravery will be remembered forever and serve as an inspiration to his fellow security guards. He illustrated what bravery and dedication to one's vocation truly entail,” he added.

Aside from the award, the PNP will also provide financial assistance to the family of the security guard.

De Leon said the PNP will give them all necessary assistance, including the transfer of Bandiala’s remains to Lopez Jaena, Misamis Occidental, as directed by PNP officer-in-charge Police Lieutenant General Vicente Danao Jr.

"We assure Bandiala's family, the community of Ateneo, and the Filipino people that justice will be served. Appropriate charges have already been filed against the perpetrator, who has been turned over to Bureau of Jail Management and Penology facilities,” he said.

"On the part of the PNP, we will ensure that his ultimate sacrifice will not go in vain by initiating dialogues with school administrators to assure the safety of all campuses across the country," he added.

Ateneo law school's graduation was scheduled to take place when the shooting incident happened. Aside from  Bandiala, also killed were former Lamitan, Basilan mayor Rose Furigay and her aide Victor Capistrano.

Furigay's daughter Hannah, one of the graduating law students, was wounded and brought to the hospital.
