Marikina River water level goes down but 2nd alarm still up

The second alarm is still in effect over the Marikina River as of 8 a.m. on Monday, local authorities said.

The water level at the river went down to 16.9 meters at 8 a.m. on Monday, the Marikina Public Information Office said on Twitter.

All eight gates were still open at the Manggahan Floodway.

The second alarm (16 meters) in Marikina City's alert level system for Marikina River means "evacuate". The first alarm, raised when water level reaches 15 meters above sea level, means "prepare".

As Typhoon Karding dumped heavy rains overnight, the water level at Marikina River reached as high as 18.4 meters at 2 a.m. on Monday.

Authorities raised the third alarm before midnight on Sunday, which meant forced evacuation of residents along the riverside and low-lying areas.

The current at the Marikina River was still strong on Monday morning, with muddy water flowing fast, as seen in a video posted by Allan Gatus of Super Radyo dzBB on Twitter.
