MMDA to install exclusive motorcycle lanes on some roads in Metro Manila

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will install exclusive motorcycle lanes on some roads in Metro Manila starting November.

In a report on Balitanghali Wednesday, GMA's Jun Veneracion said MMDA will first install the exclusive motorcycle lanes along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City.

MMDA acting chairman Carlo Dimayuga III said the exclusive motorcycle lanes will reduce road accidents and improve the flow of vehicles.

More than 26,000 road accidents involving motorcycles were recorded in 2021, the report said.

The agency said consultation with motorcycle groups and other stakeholders were conducted to lay out their plans for the creation of exclusive motorcycle lanes.

Meanwhile, 1-Rider party-list Representative Bonifacio Bosita expressed support for the initiative, saying that motorcycle groups also wanted these lanes to avoid accidents on the road.

The MMDA said it is also studying the installation of exclusive motorcycle lanes in EDSA.

In August, the MMDA said it is studying the adjustments it will make to motorcycle lanes.

It earlier said it is considering designating the rightmost lane of EDSA for motorcycles. The second lane from the left on EDSA was previously designated as a motorcycle lane. However, after the leftmost lane became the EDSA Busway in 2020, motorcycles now would weave in and out of the remaining lanes.

Based on a 2018 MMDA regulation, non-exclusive motorcycle lanes were established in different thoroughfares such as EDSA, Commonwealth, C5, among others.—Richa Noriega/AOL, GMA News
