MMDA eyes designated PUV stops along Commonwealth Ave
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Thursday said it is eyeing to create a designated stop for public utility vehicles (PUVs) along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City.
MMDA acting chairman Carlo Dimayuga III said putting up designated bus and jeepney stops aim to ensure the safety of road users in line with the setting up of exclusive motorcycle lanes along the road.
“There should be designated bus and jeepney stops for passengers as part of road safety. It’s about time to instill road discipline among all passenger vehicles," Dimayuga said during the meeting held with Quezon City local government unit (LGU), transport groups, and various jeepney operators.
Dimayuga said he sought the assistance of Quezon City LGU and jeepney operators in identifying the loading and unloading areas along Commonwealth Avenue.
“Through this, we could strategize on how the PUVs could maneuver to their designated stops. We would like to confine pedestrians to designated loading and unloading areas,” the MMDA acting chairman said.
Pasang Masda president Obet Martin, on the other hand, expressed support for the plan of the MMDA.
“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Chairman Dimayuga for addressing the concern of jeepney operators. We consider it as a welcome development,” Martin said.
The MMDA earlier said at least 1,010 motorcycle-related accidents were reported in Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City from January to August 2022.
MMDA spokesperson Atty. Melissa Carunungan said the increase in the number of accidents and safety of the motorists were the main concerns in installing the motorcycle lane in Commonwealth Avenue.
