More cities resume free movie screenings for senior citizens

Senior citizens are heading back to the cinemas for free movie screenings as more cities bring back the privilege to their elderly population.

According to Maki Pulido's report on "24 Oras," some seniors watch movies alone, while some go with their partners.

The free movie screenings were temporarily stopped due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Marikina, San Juan, Quezon City, Paranaque and Malabon, seniors may watch the first and second showings every Monday and Tuesday,

Pasig City offers free screenings for a whole week free but only for the first screening, except when it is a movie premiere week or a film festival.

This program depends on the existing ordinance of local government units. While some malls do not offer the program, a 20% discount will be granted to senior citizens.

Lawyer Romulo Macalintal, a senior citizen advocate, said that he hopes all cinemas will make the movies free and accessible to every senior citizen.

“Ang mga sinehan, hindi naman nabubulok. So bakit hindi natin ibigay sa lahat ng senior citizen?” he asked.

Meanwhile, all senior citizens are being reminded to be cautious and observe health protocols, especially as COVID-19 cases linger. Since the elders are more prone to catch the virus, wearing of face mask inside the cinema is advised.  Those with symptoms will also be not allowed in for everyone's safety.—Sherylin Untalan/LDF, GMA Integrated News
