More than 30 unauthorized motorists caught using EDSA Busway

Authorities caught more than 30 unauthorized motorists using the EDSA Busway early Monday morning.

The motorists were issued tickets after they were flagged down at the EDSA Busway in Magallanes, Makati City by operatives of the Department of Transportation - Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation (DOTr-SAICT), according to a report by Darlene Cay on Unang Balita.

Operatives of the DOTr-SAICT started their operation in Magallanes at 5 a.m. and caught taxis, motorcycles, and private vehicles on the EDSA Busway.

The DOTr earlier clarified that only the President, Vice President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court are allowed to pass through the busway.

Also allowed to use the EDSA busway are on-duty ambulances, fire trucks, and police cars.

Some of the motorists caught on Monday said they used the busway since they were in a hurry to go to work.

A passenger in one of the private vehicles caught was wearing a uniform of the Land Transportation Office. The DOTr-SAICT said it is verifying the passenger's identity.

Violators were given citation tickets for disregarding traffic sign and entering the busway.

They may have to pay a minimum of P1,000 in fine and be slapped with demerit points.

Once the 40 points are used up, motorists may have their driver's licenses suspended or revoked. —KG, GMA Integrated News
