DENR orders NCR golf courses to conserve water amid El Niño

DENR orders NCR golf courses to conserve water amid El Niño

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has directed public and private golf courses in the National Capital Region (NCR) to implement water conservation measures amid the El Niño phenomenon and the decreasing water level at Angat Dam.

"We need all sectors of society to contribute to  conserve our water supply," the DENR said in a bulletin addressed to the general managers of the golf coursers.

The golf courses are directed to follow the following regulations:

  1. All golf courses in NCR are directed to observe proper water conservation measures in irrigating fairways and greens as well as in clubhouse operations.
  2. During hours of non-operation, check the main water meter if it is still turning to detect any  possible leaks in the system. If there are internal leaks, it is advised that the main valve be closed from 8 p.m. to 4 am.
  3. For irrigating greens and fairways, golf courses are strongly encouraged to only utilize recycled water, reduce groundwater withdrawal and cease, as much as possible, the use of piped water coming from your water service provider.
  4. Recycle water coming from the clubhouse specifically those from sink and shower use (greywater) to augment your recycled water supply.
  5. Postpone any swimming pool maintenance work that will require draining and replacing water in the pool.
  6. Inform all members and guests of the El Niño conditions and your ongoing water conservation campaign.
  7. For any detected leaks that may need immediate attention, please contact the DENRWRMO (wrmo@denr.gov.ph) or MWSS (0967-3197144/0943-4648776). For leaks along streets and before your meter, please report them to your water service provider (Manila Water or Maynilad).

According to the DENR, its personnel will be conducting spot checks and information drives in in the coming  weeks.

Covered by the bulletin are the Camp Aguinaldo Golf, Veterans Golf, Army-Kagitingan Golf, Villamor Golf, Club Intramuros, Philippine Navy Golf, Wack-Wack Golf, Manila Golf, Valley Golf, Sun Valley  Golf, Alabang Golf, Foresthills Golf and Eastridge Golf. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
