One of the suspects behind the ambush of photojournalist Rene Joshua Abiad in 2023 was rearrested by the police last Tuesday, May 14.

The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) arrested Jomari Campillo, 25, in front of the Quezon City Hall of Justice, following an arrest warrant issued by Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 86.

The arrest warrant stemmed from the cases of murder and three counts of frustrated murder against Campillo and his cohorts.

Campillo was first arrested by authorities in July 2013 for violating the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, but was later released after posting bail.

Abiad and his family were onboard an SUV last June 29, 2023 when another vehicle blocked their way in Barangay Masambong in Quezon City. A man wearing a black jacket got out of the car and started firing at the media man’s car.

The incident led to the death of Abiad’s four-year-old nephew after he was shot in the head. Some of Abiad’s relatives and a bystander were also injured in the incident.

Presidential Task Force on Media Security Executive Director Usec. Paul Gutierrez said the five other suspects in the ambush are being sought by the police, including the mastermind alias “Nanad.”
