Security agency attends probe on ‘Sampaguita Girl’ incident

Representatives of the security agency involved in the December 2024 altercation between a Sampaguita vendor and a security guard appeared before the Philippine National Police (PNP) as part of the ongoing investigation, the Civil Security Group (CSG) confirmed on Monday.

“We will just wait for the official report ng [Supervisory Office for Security and Investigation Agencies or SOSIA] for an update. But initial info ay nag-appear sila,” said Police Lieutenant Colonel Eudisan Gultiano, chief of the CSG public information office, in a message to GMA News Online.

(We will wait for the official report from the SOSIA for updates. But initial information confirms that the agency's representatives have appeared.)

An administrative investigation has been initiated against the security guard. SOSIA is also looking into the possible liabilities of both the guard and the agency stemming from the incident.

In another message, the PNP-CSG said the security guard also attended the meeting, where they were informed of the preliminary investigation’s purpose and the requirements for the submission of pertinent documents and affidavits.

It added that the affidavit on the incident will be submitted on or before January 23, 2025, within the prescribed three-day timeline.

The security guard refused to have an interview with the media to protect his privacy, CSG spokesperson Police Lieutenant Colonel Eudisan Gultiano said.

A viral video captured the altercation, which showed the security guard arguing with the young sampaguita vendor. The situation escalated and the guard snatched and destroyed her flower bundles. The vendor retaliated by hitting the guard with the damaged garlands, with the guard responding in kind.

The CSG reminded all private security professionals (PSPs) to uphold the PSP Creed and adhere to the Code of Ethical Standards of their profession.

“We sincerely apologize for the actions displayed in the video and assure everyone that due process is being conducted with the guard involved,” said Redeye Management, the security agency that employed the guard.

“May this incident serve as a reminder to all agencies of the values we must uphold in performing our duties. It is crucial to prioritize de-escalation and to prevent emotions from taking control of our actions,” the agency added.

Redeye also emphasized their commitment to inclusivity, stating they would remind their guards to act with empathy, compassion, and professionalism. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
