Suspect in 'rentangay' car theft nabbed in Pasay City

Police have arrested a man allegedly involved in stealing cars using the "rentangay" modus, a scheme in which the car thief rents a vehicle but doesn't return it.

Instead, the car is sold to unsuspecting buyers, or its spare parts are taken and sold.

According to Jun Veneracion's report on "24 Oras," members of the PNP-Highway Patrol Group arrested the suspect on Tuesday night in Pasay City.

The police have been looking for the suspect since October 2024 on carnapping charges.

“Ang gagawin po niyan, sa pagkakaalam po, natin pi-pwedeng pyesahin na nya yan o ibenta sa ibang tao. Nasa likod ‘to ng malaking sindikato,” said PNP-HPG spokesperson Police Leiutenant Nadame Malang said.

(What they do is they take its parts and sell them or the car will be sold. A huge syndicate is behind this.)

Victims went to the PNP-HPG office after they learned of the suspect's arrest.

The suspect is under PNP-HPG custody. He refused to comment on the allegations against him. –Celine Serquina/NB, GMA Integrated News
