Truck helper dies after jumping from wayward truck

A truck helper died after jumping off a 10-wheeler truck that lost its brakes and plowed into the roadblocks.

According to a "24 Oras" report by Ian Cruz, the accident occurred at 4 a.m. on Tuesday along Marcos Highway in Antipolo, Rizal.

In a CCTV footage, the truck was seen going straight onto a footbridge and collided with two parked tricycles.

The truck driver was injured, but his helper, who panicked and jumped off the vehicle, was killed.

“Nakita ko 'yung pahinante tumalon, nag-panic, patay siya. (Tumama siya) sa poste,” said a witness, Jose Regidor.

(I saw the helper jump; he panicked, and he died. He hit the post.)

The truck was loaded with hollow blocks and is said to coming from Cogeo, Rizal.

“Lost break, simula parish wala na siyang preno,” said Raymond Montoya, Antipolo Traffic Officer.

(It lost its break; starting from the parish, it already lost its brakes.)

The driver is now under police custody.

Meanwhile, on Roxas Boulevard in Manila, a motorcycle rider was found covered with blood and lifeless under a 10-wheel truck.

The identity of the female victim has not yet been determined because the Manila Police District Traffic Enforcement Unit did not obtain her ID or wallet.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated, but the truck driver was taken to the hospital. The two helpers who were with him did not give any statement but said they were asleep when the accident happened. — Sherylin Untalan/BAP, GMA Integrated News
