BOC seizes P1.18B worth of smuggled vapes, used clothing in Valenzuela
Authorities have uncovered an estimated P1.18 billion worth of smuggled goods, including disposable vapes, vape pods, and other contraband in a warehouse in Valenzuela City.
The vape products alone were valued at approximately P320,069,900, including the excise taxes that should have been collected by the government, according to a statement released by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) on Saturday.
The other smuggled goods, such as used clothing (ukay-ukay), phone chargers, and various merchandise, amounted to an estimated P860 million.
There were also handheld and desk fans, food products, wireless headsets, disposable syringes, office chairs, and wall panels.
BOC Commissioner Bien Rubio confirmed that the seized items originated from China.
“We are seeing a significant shift in the market as more Filipinos, especially the younger generation, turn to vaping over traditional tobacco products. This makes border control even more crucial in ensuring that only safe, regulated, and licensed vape products are available,” said Commissioner Rubio.
Rubio also warned against the dangers of using unregulated vape products, stressing that smuggled goods have not undergone proper safety checks and may pose health risks.
Following the raid conducted on Thursday, the BOC placed padlocks and seals on the warehouse while preparing for a full inventory of the seized goods.
The inspection will be conducted in the presence of CIIS, the Enforcement and Security Service (ESS), and warehouse representatives.
The warehouse and shop owners may face legal charges under multiple provisions, including violations of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA) related to regulated importation and misdeclaration.
Additional charges may be filed under Republic Act 8293 (Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines), Republic Act 10963 (TRAIN Law), and National Tobacco Administration (NTA) regulations governing tobacco product imports. —Sherylin Untalan/ VAL, GMA Integrated News
