Truck driver apologizes for fatal Marikina accident that left 3 dead, 10 hurt

The driver of the trailer truck that overturned while ascending an uphill road that ended up killing three people apologized for the fatal accident on Thursday.

In EJ Gomez’s Thursday report on “24 Oras,” the six-vehicle pileup in Barangay Fortune, Marikina City also injured 10 others.

At around 10 p.m. on Wednesday evening, the trailer truck was going uphill when it suddenly stopped and descended in reverse, overturned and damaged the vehicles behind it, including two jeepneys, two cars, and one SUV.

The 55-year-old truck driver is currently under the custody of the Marikina City Police.

He said he was delivering tobacco and cotton from Manila to Marikina.

“Nararamdaman ko po na medyo pahina yung tunog ng truck po tapos hindi na kayang umahon kaya nga nagpreno po ako kahit anong apak ko po sa preno ko walang wala talaga po,” the truck driver said.

“Hindi ko po talaga sinasadya po talaga yan. Aksidente po talaga yan. Sorry po kung anong nangyari. Tao lang po tayo,” he added.

(I felt that the truck was losing power and could not go up, so I stepped on the brakes, but despite doing so, the truck was not stopping. I really did not mean it. It was an accident. I’m really sorry. I’m just human.)

The truck driver is facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicides and multiple injury with multiple damage to property.

The vehicles involved in the accident were removed from the road by 6 a.m. on Thursday.
