EDSA logged the most recorded road accidents in major thoroughfares in Metro Manila in 2024

EDSA logged the most recorded road accidents in major thoroughfares in Metro Manila in 2024, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

In a social media post by GMA Integrated News’ Joseph Morong on Thursday, he said that the MMDA reported a total of 8,873 road accidents along EDSA.

C-5 Road placed second with the most vehicle crashes, with 8,675, followed by Commonwealth Ave. with 5,091 road accidents.

Quezon Avenue (2,883) and Roxas Boulevard (1,659) were also among the roads with the most accidents in Metro Manila.

They were followed by Marcos Highway (1,358) and Radial Road 10 (660), respectively.

The latest data was shown during the MMDA Metro Manila Road Safety Summit 2

Citing data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the MMDA said road-related deaths increased by 39%, from 7,938 deaths in 2011 to 11,096 deaths in 2021.

The MMDA noted that road-related injuries are the top cause of death among Filipinos aged 15 to 29.

There is also a 47% increase in road crash cases from 2021 to 2023.

Among road crash victims in the same period, drivers logged the most number of fatalities with 2,390, followed by pedestrians (1,636) and passengers (592).

The MMDA said most of the fatalities are male, which comprise 76.18%.

In 2024, truck-to-motorcycle cases recorded the highest count with 62 fatalities, followed by car-to-motorcycle incidents with 55 fatalities.

Meanwhile, truck-to-pedestrian cases posted the highest fatality rate with 15.53%.

The MMDA said hit pedestrian collisions had 111 fatal cases, the highest number in 2024.

This was followed by self accidents with 77 cases. The MMDA said this is often caused by human errors such as speeding or distracted driving.

Rear-end collision is the third most common cause of fatality, with 60 cases.

From 2013 to 2023, the least number of road accidents occurred from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., while most vehicle crashes happened from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Public safety

The MMDA has implemented several measures to ensure public safety on the road.

Among them is the Metro Manila Accident Reporting and Analysis System, which identifies trends and patterns to improve road safety.

The MMDA Children’s Road Safety Park and Motorcycle Riding Academy were also established to promote traffic education among children and motorcycle riders, respectively.

For its Metro Manila Road Safety Action Plan 2024-2028, the MMDA aims to reduce road fatalities by 35% by 2028.

It focuses on the five pillars of road safety, which have their own target for creating a safer road environment.

These pillars are road safety management, safer roads, safer vehicles, safer road users, and post-crash response. –VAL/VBL, GMA Integrated News
